Intelligent Nanoparticles
The INPUs, the Intelligent Nanoparticles Units, are chain-likely connected anisotropic self-assembles of gold / silver nanoparticles, which strongly absorb light at the wavelength corresponding to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSP) in the long axis direction of the anisotropic nanostructure and produce enhanced electric field in the gap of the nanoparticles. By the action of the INPUs consist of noble metal nanoparticles, anisotropic nanostructure and bottle neck structure, Raman scattering of molecules enough close to the assembles is enhanced. This phenomenon is known as "surface enhanced Raman scattering", SERS. SERS is expected to be useful for label free (dye free) sensing or nanobeacon.

As a method of measuring the molecules in solution using the INPUs, two practical procedures are introduced. One is the co-aggregation method which is so high sensitive as to enable single level molecule detection of various molecules. Second is the pre-aggregation method with high selectivity and simple handling. Both are available only by laser irradiation after mixing the INPUs and the sample solution.
When the noble metal nanoparticles self-assembled, the SERS active nanostructure is formed spontaneously incorporating the sample molecules on the nanoparticle surface. For the convenient experimental procedure, gold nanoparticles (colloidal gold) for SERS, silver nanoparticles (colloidal silver) for SERS, the aggregation initiator, and the aggregation terminator are prepared. In the co-aggregation, the aggregation terminator which terminates the progress of aggregation at the moment when the SERS active nanostructure is formed and holds the nanostructure (colloid aggregates) in liquid medium plays an important role. The gold nanoparticles for SERS enables stable measurement by using the near-infrared laser, and the silver nanoparticles for SERS also enables by using incident laser of wavelength from visible to near-infrared.

2) Pre-aggregation
Depending on the analyte molecules, pre-aggregation method by means of the pre-aggregated and stabilized noble metal colloid in solution is available. The gold nanoparticles assemble dispersion (pre-aggregated colloidal gold) enables stable and convenient measurement by using the incident laser in the near-infrared wavelength, and the silver nanoparticles assemble dispersion (pre-aggregated colloidal silver) also enables by using mainly near-infrared laser. The chloride activation technique is effective in the use of the silver nanoparticles assemble dispersion in many cases.
